Numerous polls show that the vast majority of our world’s population agrees that animal testing for the purpose of consumer goods is wrong, and many consumers are putting their money where their mouth is.
According to Cruelty Free International, the top nine animal testing countries in the world are the United States, Japan, China, Australia, France, Canada, the UK, Germany and Brazil. So when news came out this year about China removing its finished product animal testing requirement, and Canada introducing the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act into the House of Commons, many proponents of the cruelty-free movement, like our team here at Orange Orchard, were relieved.
Cruelty-free: From alternative to mainstream
These types of legislative acts, along with the growth of cruelty-free brands and cruelty-free certifications and watchdog companies, signifies that cruelty-free is no longer an alternative lifestyle, it’s becoming mainstream.
As Melanie Curtin wrote in her 2018 Inc. article about millennials and their spending habits (who are, by the way, about to become the largest living generation in the U.S.):
I can attest to the fact that sustainability isn’t just something I “sorta kinda” consider–it’s one of the primary reasons I either buy or don’t buy from consumer brands.
When browsing beauty products, my first question is, “Is it cruelty-free?” not how pretty the blush is. When looking at food items like coffee, I want to know first that it’s Fair Trade. I don’t want to support companies that don’t care about how the animals and/or workers are treated, and I do want to support those that do.
In other words, I’m willing to spend more (a lot more, in fact) to know that what I’m spending my money on is actually good for the earth and the people on it.
If your company has been considering a shift in practices to meet the growing demand of consumers for your products to be cruelty-free, now is the time to act. And with the right PR agency, you can make sure your voice is heard and becomes a trusted source in the cruelty-free market.
