Creating positive change may not require being seen on the public stage, but it certainly helps. As large corporations embrace their social responsibility, they are capitalizing upon their brand visibility to promote importance causes.
Taking a Stand
In July, Starbucks took a symbolic stand against the growing threat of global plastic pollution by announcing that it would eliminate the use of plastic straws by 2020. Writing in Forbes, Trevor Nace reports that although plastic straws only account for 0.03 percent of total plastic waste by mass, the importance of the account should not be underestimated:
To take a step back, the campaign on plastic straw use is really about the larger plastic use globally. By bringing celebrities, cities, and companies on board the goal is to raise further awareness of the harm in single-use plastics. In addition, this is a small, easy, and quick change each person can make to their lives. It is the proverbial lowest hanging fruit in the plastic elimination effort. While plastic straws are by no means the largest source of plastic trash… they represent a first step toward reduction. Hence, one can argue that while focusing on plastic straws may be going after a smaller culprit, it is the gateway for further conservation.
