Have you noticed that the ocean feels like it’s trying to get our attention? Scientists say sea surface temperatures keep breaking records, pollution is everywhere and marine life is disappearing. And yet 2025 offers rare opportunities to turn things around.
At Orange Orchard, we believe the way you talk about these challenges can make all the difference. Our team of veteran journalists and public‑relations pros helps animal‑welfare and eco‑friendly brands share their passion through strategic marine animal PR campaigns. We translate complex science into compelling stories that inspire action, whether you’re launching a plant‑based product, advocating for marine life or championing renewable energy.
Oceans cover almost three‑quarters of Earth and hold 97% of its water. Research shows Tiny phytoplankton produce half of the oxygen we breathe. Yet we’ve treated the sea as an endless resource. Overfishing, pollution, coastal development and invasive species have damaged habitats. A decade ago less than one percent of the ocean was fully protected; today about eight percent lies inside marine protected areas, or MPAs.
Research underscores how thin that safety net is. A study published earlier this year tracked more than 100 species of sharks, whales, turtles and other ocean giants and showed that their feeding and migratory routes don’t fit inside existing protected zones. These animals’ core habitats overlap with fishing fleets, shipping lanes and warming “hot spots,” so scientists are calling for more MPAs and practical fixes like safer fishing gear and smarter ship routes.
And people are responding. Earlier this year Dynamic Planet and National Geographic launched “Revive Our Ocean,” helping coastal communities design their own MPAs. Organizers note that we need 190,000 new reserves to meet the goal of protecting 30 percent of the ocean by 2030.
Marine mammals remind us why these efforts matter. Whales, dolphins and manatees rely on the ocean and serve as indicators of ecosystem health. In the United States, they’re protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which largely prohibits harassing, hunting or capturing them. Laws like that prove policy can drive change – but only if people care.
That’s why telling your story is so important. When the public understands how marine conservation connects to their lives, they’re more likely to support the policies and practices that protect our oceans.
Let Orange Orchard help you craft that narrative. Call us at (865) 977‑1973 or contact us online to start a conversation. Together we can make sure that 2025 becomes the year the ocean’s alarm bells turned into a call for action.
